Kai Thomas is a graduate of University of Guelph's Creative Writing Master of Fine Arts Program. Apart from writing, he works as a carpenter and a land steward. He is Afro-Canadian, born and raised in Ottawa, descended from Trinidad and the British Isles. In the Upper Country is his first novel and was shortlisted for the 2023 Governor General's Award for Fiction, is the winner of the 2023 Atwood Gibson Writers' Trust Award, and was shortlisted for the 2023 Amazon Canada First Novel Award.
