2011 MARTY Awards The time to celebrate the city s top artists is quickly approaching! The Mississauga Arts Council MAC is thrilled to announce it is now accepting nominations for the 2011 MARTY Awards. Talented artists are encouraged to submit nominations for the chance to win a MARTY Award and be recognized by the community. Now into its 17th year, the MARTY Awards celebrate the artistic achievement of established artists while encouraging and supporting emerging artistic talent. Past MARTY Award recipients includeinternationally celebrated rock bands illScarlett and Billy Talent, Jazz legend Oscar Peterson, sci-fi writer Robert J. Sawyer, fi lmmaker Richie Mehta and rocker Rik Emmett. AWARD CATEGORIES INCLUDE: Visual Arts Literary Arts Media Arts Performing Arts Performing Arts Groups Each category will honour an emerging artist and an established artist. The recipients ofthe MARTYS will be announced on May 13, 2011 at the MARTYS celebration to be held at LivingArts Centre s Hammerson Hall. Winners will receive $1,000, press coverage and recognition.Every year the MARTYS is the pinnacle arts event in Mississauga and is complete with extensivemedia coverage and a red carpet kick-off. The Mississauga Arts Council is also accepting nominations for four additional MARTY Awards;the Volunteer of the Year Award, the Laurie Pallett Patron of the Arts Award, the People sChoice Award and the new Creative Community Award. Designed especially for giving and nurturing individuals, the Volunteer of the Year Awardand the Laurie Pallett Patron of the Arts Award are presented to individuals who have made asignificant contribution to the arts in Mississauga. Nomination forms are now available online. Mississauga Arts Council Executive Director,Linda Thomas is thrilled to announce the inauguration of the Creative Community Award. We areopening the doors to other art forms that have not been traditionally recognized. The establishment of this new award allows for recognition for a broader scope of creativeexpression. It s an award open to any other form of artistic expression including fibre arts,flower arranging, wearable art, wood turning, spinning and weaving, jewelry, fashion arts etc.We are encouraging artists in the community to share their work and submit an application. Lastly, the People s Choice Award will continue in 2011. Once all of the nominations for theawards have been collected, the general public will be invited to vote for their favouritenominated artist.
